Default What does cat pee smell like?

I see no evidence of spraying, but sometimes our house smells like a skunk. Granted, the windows are open so it very welll COULD be the smell of a skunk coming in from outside . . .but it seems too strong for that.

If the odor is stronger than skunk-smell (and you don't have an intact tomcat), there's either a LOT of pee in your house or maybe a tom is spraying outside your windows.

Hmm . . .it does not smell like ammonia (does not smell like it does when I clean the cat box). I cannot imagine there being a lot of pee . . .never have seen a cat pee outside the box, everyone is spayed/neutered, everyone seems to get along. I have only seen a Calico around here outside, but I'm guessing she's a female since male Calicos are rare . . .

It is weird. It really smells like skunk (like the inside of a rubber balloon) but strong. I think it's going away or I'm getting used to it.

(It just happened during the night.)

Get a black light and shine it around the darkened house at night. Any pet stains (and some others not related to pets) will be very obvious if the smell is coming from inside your home.

Many pet stores carry kits of a small black light and enzymatic cleaner.

I have thought of that, but I am sort of scared to look . . .I have 3 young children, so do I really want to know (other than if it is cat pee!)?

There is the possibility that it is secretions from one of the cats anal glands. These glands are a holdover from their wild ancestors, meant to mark their dropping with a unique scent in the wild. It's a fairly pungent smell.

My cat has some powerful anal glands. I bet that's probably what you're smelling, because in large quantities it DOES smell skunky.

I don't know how to express them, but the vet does it when my kitty gets shaved. Sometimes, if they're not expressed often enough they..er...express themselves, OR he'll drag his butt on the carpet. Nice, huh?

My cat is a neutered male, who was neutered at 4 weeks. He's never marked a day in his life, so it can't be a territory thing with him.
