Default Does your cat "Bless you" when you sneeze?

Everytime I, or anyone else sneezes, Ninja will make this chattery meowing sound.

This seems to be a very common occurrence with cats, and I've read about many other similar instances, but no one seems to know why.

Most people agree, it is the cats way of saying "Bless you." Which is a nice way to think about it; even in this house we tell Ninja, "Thank you" after he makes the sound, but in reality this is a very human gesture and not something an animal would even care about (given that they burp and fart in front of us and act like nothing happened lol).

I've even read a post from another forum explaining that to a cat, a human sneeze sounds much like a feline "spit," and the cat has taken offense to it and responds with that sound. But this seems ridiculous to me since whenever I sneeze, more often than not, Ninja is sleeping on his back, feet curled in the air and doesn't even bother to open his eyes when he makes the chattering meow/bless you sound.

Since so many cats respond this way, there has to be a reason for it. I'm curious if you guys have experienced this and what you have come up with as an explanation.

Pumpkin trills when I sneeze, often accompanied by a headbutt in the face

This is such a cute thread! I'm going to move it to Cat Chat for you

My cat growing up would meow at my dad but the thing was that my dad sneezed SO loud and like 10 times or more in a row so I think it was her way or telling him that it was too loud and hurt her ears.

Taz (RB) would come running if I sneezed, meowing all the way. His meow definitely had a question sound to it, so I always took it as if he was saying if I was ok. We had a special connection, so it did not seem odd that he was checking up on me.

The only time my cats react when I sneeze is if they happen to be sitting on me at the time. Then they jump down and run off, very indignant that I disturbed their repose. Bad human!

Now this seems more consistent with the feline "spiting" reaction. Like maybe the cats thought you were mad and began hissing/spiting at them and they ran away. Either that or the sound just scared them!

They do the same thing if I laugh, though. I think it's the fact I move when I laugh/sneeze that disturbs them. Bad human! Humans currently serving as cat furniture should stay PERFECTLY STILL.

LOL
I was looking to see if this behviour was usual as my 8 month old (kitten still ) has started doing this recently. I've had cats most of my life and have never even heard of this let alone seen/ heard it. When I sneeze Scruffy will look over and chatter at me with this admonishing look on his face . He does believe he's the boss of me so I'd go with the admonishment theory! Although, of course, I'd like it to be a blessing!

Admonishment!? What an interesting word. I had never even heard of it and had to look it up. I figured you must be from the UK or something, but after further investigation it made sense..

Well teacher, thanks for my word of the day!
