I am also thinking of keeping the backs off of the bookcases as well..

Keepin my eye on this thread.
I'm sure I will be adding on to my cat stairs sometime and like looking at ideas. I'll try to fins a picture of my cat's "stairway to Heaven": Not a great picture- too far away, but the cats love to run up and down the stairs and sleep up on the perch

What type of materials did you use for that?
My only worry would be that my dog would try to climb them... lol.
