There are so many looking for homes and it's so sad. You have been given a lot of wonderful advice already! Good luck with your search and can't wait to see pics of your new baby!

You can't always go by what the shelter or rescue says about the cat. Unfortunately, sometimes the people relinquishing them lie about the reason. "Allergies" seems to be a popular excuse, and they don't want to say they don't get along with other animals, because they don't want their pet put down.
This has been my main concern. The dogs accepted his cat from day one. He has been obsessed with the dogs because he's been around them since he was tiny and he likes to tease them. The dogs are not aggressive in any way, but I feel more nervous about how they and the cat will accept an older cat as opposed to a kitten.

We're definitely going to follow the proper introductions. It really makes sense to take it slow with intros, especially with the two dogs.

I think his cat would definitely love to play with a kitten, because he is really so energetic and curious. I'm more nervous about him being ok with an older cat.

But in the end, I guess it's up to chance either way. I like the advice to see which one picks me, and going from there.

Oh, and the color would is not really important for me. I'm just looking for a companion who fits in the household. I won't overlook the black cats.

I'll keep everyone posted!

The best bond and usually the cuddliest cat is the one that picks you out, rather than you picking the cat. Do spend at least 1-2 hrs. with the cat, sit on the floor and see which one is attracted to you consistently, and do more than one visit. Generally speaking, I've found that cats of similar age have the easiest intros to each other, tho as Susan pointed out there can be some exceptions. Good luck! and let us know how things work out.
I agree with this person. When I was looking for a cat at petsmart to adopt, I came across this traditional siamese teenager. He was rubbing himself against the cages and meowing at me, licking my fingers. He was the most loving cat I had ever seen. I hadn't planned on adopting a cat yet (was going to discuss it with my mother) but he took my heart and I never looked back. So yes, I agree the best one is the one that picks you out. You will know when that happens.
