Default Your favorite thing your cat does that's mimicks his wild ancestry?

The coolest thing about cats is that it's like having a little bit of nature in your house. I don't remember the exact percentage, but genetically they're amazingly close to their lion ancestors.

So, what's the favorite thing your cat does that mimmicks his lion heritage. Examples of things I've seen threads include...

Drops toys in water bowl
Scratches (burying) after eating.
random meows from other rooms.

Can we add to this list? Feel free to include explanations as I'm sure this might even become a resource thread.

Gato (the tubby 13lb boy) is twice the size of his sister and cat naps all day long while Neko(the dainty 7lb girl) runs around hunting her toys, our legs, the dog, the rabbits, the fish, flies.... anything that moves!

The first time I gave my mild mannered angelic MowMow a chicken wing.... he sniffed it...licked it... then grabbed it and ran off under the table with it growling and chomping. SO and I were in hysterics at my sweet smooshyface growling like a wild beast while he gnawed on a chicken wing.

For Shepherd Book it's the way he stalks things. MOwMOw will wiggle his butt and pounce but to Shepherd Book it *means* something. He gets low to the ground, lays his ears down and creeps up on his toys like he is about to take down a 200 lb wildabeast. He looks SOOO serious that I sometimes have to snatch him up and kiss him.

Blaze scratches around his food... and marks his territory. Blacky brings us mice. All in all, I'd rather just have the food bowl scratching.

CeCe does what I call the "death roll" when she's playing/stalking/hunting. Basically, she grabs something between her front paws, braces it against he back paws, then throws herself down on top of it, rolling over it a couple times and attacking it. Sometimes she she leaps and lands on it then begins the death roll.

One time, I had to thaw a whole frozen chicken, and left it sitting in the sink. Since it was frozen, I didn't think it would interest CeCe (she doesn't like wet or raw straight from the fridge) but I guess it was too overwhelming for her. I'd run to the corner market to pick some things up, and when I came back, CeCe had gotten the chicken over to her feeding station and had chewed off the corner of the bag - she was gnawing on the bony knob of one of the legs. Basically, a 7.5 pound cat somehow lifted a 5.5 pound frozen chicken from bottom of sink to counter height, knocked it off the counter, and dragged it about 10 feet, out of the kitchen and over to her feeding station (leaving behind a trail of that watery pink blood that's left over in chicken packages). So, lesson learned ... all meat is now thawed in an ENCLOSED area. I did crack up that she dragged it over to where she usually eats - as if having it in that area make it OK for her to eat.

Great thread idea! But cats belong to the family of the tigers, not the lions?

Being most alert at dawn and dusk.

Seeking anything resembling a cave niche to rest in, being happiest with 5 sides closed (top, sides, back and floor)

My *ahem* "foster" kitten, The Niblet, has a whole list of wild animals things she does. There are always toys in any one of the water dishes, heck sometimes there is even a kitten! She also likes to carry toys around.

Jasio is a hoarder, he collects furry mouse toys, pens, straws, socks, spoons, you name it. Every now and again I find a stash and that is always good for a laugh. He is also my hunter, for an indoor cat he has a pretty good record, numerous mice and one poor unfortunate house sparrow, plus countless flies and moths.

Xerxes is my "Must bury ALL the things!" cat, anything remotely "stinky" gets covered up (this includes the dog when she needs a bath) and the food dish needs to be hidden after meals. Just to be safe, he'll cover the other cat's dishes too.

what do your cats cover their food dishes with??

Libby will do the scratch around thing repeatedly until I take pity on her and throw a napkin overtop of it...

We're both "kind of" right...

The wild cats of today such as Lions and Tigers descended from early carnivores called miacids. From there the modern wild cat developed into three main types; the European wild cat, the African wild cat and the Asiatic desert cat. The domestic cat is thought to have evolved from the African wild cat because of its tabby markings
