Question Cat Making Noises at Birds

When my cat Princess looks out the window or front door, she often makes noises when she sees birds. The sound she makes is "meh-meh." She is an indoor cat and our windows are closed because of the cold weather. The front door is all glass.

I'm wondering, why does Princess make noises when she sees birds?
Does anyone else's cat do this?

Both my boys chatter when they see birds outside.

MowMow also makes that noise at me when he wants something very specific (like something I'm eating or a toy that he can't reach under something).

google cat 'chattering'. Mine do some kind of 'ack ack' or 'mehehe-mehehe' when they see something they'd like to catch. Squeek made that noise at a fly, just before she caught and ate it. They make it when they see birds out the window too. I don't know what purpose it serves. Some people think its to attract the prey closer, but I don't see how that would work for them.

Our Emily usually is quiet when watching the birds, but sometimes will give out a few meh's when particually interested.

Both Winston and Niska do it. Winston more than Niska. It is like they get hyper excited. I do my own translation a,d it goes "oh, oh! Bird, bird, please let me catch it, please!".

Puffy used to make a strange chattering sound. Callie has tried to do it twice that I've heard. I say "tried" because she sometimes loses her voice and both times no sound was coming out except for some weird clicking. lol
