Below is the reason why our cats won't let us touch them "in public". Minute 3:20

Ha! Never considered that it might be unseemly to be seen by other cats as fraternizing with the "enemy" (or a potential meal).

Ferals can make wonderful pets (not just cats - we had loads of wild animals that couldn't be released because of on-going physical problems - not to mention the ones who were released and chose not to go) - but they are different and you will always need to remember that.

That's just one of the things that I like about ferals. I don't know how/what they think, but I'm pretty sure that they don't consider themselves "pets, companions" or anything of the sort
We are seriously considering trying to take the gentlest of the garage cats indoors. We've had some trial runs (a week or two) and I'm not convinced that he wouldn't rather be back in the garage.
The indoor cats look out of the window with what appears to be envy. The garage cats look in the window with what appears to be only curiosity.

Prince won't be caught dead being petted by me in the presence of the strays downstairs. He has to protect his macho image or he'll lose their respect, which could become dangerous. He doesn't even come near me while we're outside, whereas behind closed doors he wants to cuddle 24/7.

Don't forget too that some cats just aren't lap cats. I've had Margaux for nearly 11 years, and she has never once sat in my lap. She also doesn't like to walk on anything that her paws sink into, so I figure that if I work out and have thighs of steel, maybe she'll come sit with me.

Wow! 11 years and still not a lap cat, looks like ET won't be one too, or maybe still too early to tell? only coming 11mths in another few days time, not 11years, lol.

One of my strays wouldn't sit on my lap whatever I did, so I gave up. One day, a year after we met, she suddenly, all cautious, climbed on my lap.

Nikita doesn't like to sit on my lap, never did. She also doesn't like to sleep in the bed with me. But she loves to cuddle.

Margaux will curl up next to me, and she loves to sleep on anything that smells like me or in the exact spot that I vacated, but never on my lap. She used to sleep in her little bed on my bed, until I moved here and bought a memory foam mattress. Again, I think it's the fact that her paws aren't on a firm surface that she doesn't like. That's ok. Celia climbs all over me.
