Hi Amber, I agree with both Marie and Maggie...I know this isn't what you want to hear, and I'm sorry, I know you're excited about a kitten, but a huge part of being a really good pet parent is thinking beyond your own wants...a kitten will take more work, and time than you realize, kittens are very high energy, and a kitten deserves a forever home, and someone who is completely looking out for that precious little life...with a kitten you have to kitten/baby proof everything! no hair bands lying around, wire cords, batteries, paper clips, etc, etc!
To many kittens/cats get returned to a shelter (and they're the lucky ones, they at least get another chance, maybe, of being adopted) the rest are often tossed outside to fend for themselves, with all the scary dangers out there...
I will suggest an alternate idea...perhaps you could adopt an older cat, that has been waiting for a Special person to see its potential...many beautiful older cats are looking for a forever home, and a shelter could help guide you to a Low energy type, that would Love nothing more than to be a cuddle cat, and keep you company in your room, this would also be a great introduction into the world of cats for you.
Is your Mom fully on board with you getting a cat, in-spite of her allergies?? If she's only grudgingly agreeing to it...it may not bode well for any cat you might get now...
perhaps to get a kitten/cat fix you could volunteer at a shelter one day a week, until you can be on your own...
