Its because you're reading it and not paying her any attention!

Every time I lay on my bed and have a magazine or book or even blank piece of paper that I'm looking at, my cat will stroll up, lay down and get comfy.

Guess you'll have to learn to read with the paper in the air!

Don't count on reading it vertically, either! You'll soon find a paw pushing the paper down. We're all victims, but that's the price we pay so that they'll allow us to live with them!

Both of my cats do this as well, but Briar is a junkie for the circulars. I pile them up on the floor by the couch and she just loves spreading them out all over the floor. Then she runs and jumps on them, sliding another few feet across the carpet. If I let her, she has them spread from the kitchen to the bedroom door in no time at all... such a freak!

Jinx does the same, but he is slick about it. Usually I read in the armchair - holding the book vertically. He will sit between me and the arm for awhile. Then unexpectedly, he will launch himself to the top of what I am reading, catching me totally unprepared and totally knocking the book out of my grasp. If it is laying flat, he will lay on it. He could be ignoring me - sometimes I'll call him and he doesn't want to come - but open a book, there he is.

Cats love to play with paper, any paper, any position.

Yup, my cats resemble that statement.

I build newspaper hills for them to run thru and jump on. They love the crinkle and noise.

Do you notice that they suddenly seem to expand exponentially to somehow completely cover the entire paper/magazine/book that you're trying to read? And my Mozart loves to make an impression by leaving bite marks on all corners.

I agree - cats love any paper. My cat, Maya, loves toilet roll (clean ) and kitchen roll and merrily shreds whole rolls if they are left within her reach. Very annoying if it's your last roll!!!!
My new cat, Mulberry, is a newspaper shredder too. I sometimes come home to an interesting mess!!!

Maybe a toy that crinkles would be ideal? Maybe even encourage them to leave your paper alone...Here are some:

Our Falcore will climb up into your lap when you are trying to read something. He seems to be able to lay on anything. He lays on shoes, boxes, vacuum cleaner when off, dryer, washing machine. He just seems to pick the weirdest and most uncomfortable of places to recline.
