kiki will sometimes find a smell on the carpet of our new place and will smell around it... then will look up and around then will shover her nose in the place where im guessing the the carpet smells the most then she will come up with her eyes glazed over and her mouth hanging open with this "happy/high" look on her face... first off... why is she doing this... and second off... is she doing it because she likes the smell... or hates it...

There is a word for that (can't think of it right now, but I think it starts with an "f"). I think your cat is just trying to process this smell and it's actually smelling it through its mouth. My cat does this all the time on top of one of my reclining chairs. Pretty funny to watch no?

ok, I remember it now, the look is called "flehmen". Other's have actually posted about this subject so if you're interested just run a search on this site or elsewhere on the web, and you could find out more about it.

Cats can smell with an additional organ called the Jacobson's organ, located in the upper surface of the mouth. When they are trying to figure out a particular or new smell, they'll use this. That's why their mouths hang open a bit.
