Well, it's odd if he's never done it before.

But it is something cats do. Kitty takes care of her own back nails. I've never trimmed them. See just bites and pulled the shedded nail off. It does look like she's trying to pull her entire toe off.

She does it regularily, I'll see her do it maybe once every other month. But I'm sure she does it when I'm not around too.

But, if you've had your cat for a while and you've never seen him do that, you might want to check out those nails and make sure they look okay.

it's kind of odd that it would be just the one nail. maybe there's something wrong with that nail that's irritating. usually they bite all their back nails, as kitty's mom says, thereby keeping them trimmed.

Yup, they chew and yank on their back nails to maintain them, so it's a normal thing. Mine do it in the still of the night just so we can hear every single grinding gnaw and yank.

However, if he keeps worrying one nail, have a look at it, maybe it split and needs attention.

Yeah this is normal, Puma does it all the time. But if your kitty has never done it before then I would just keep an eye out to see if there is anything wrong with the nail.

Kitty is so immaculate. She takes good care of her nails. But it makes me sad because she tries to do her front nails too...but they're gone since she is front declawed. I'm like...stop biting those toes!!! There's nothing there!
