Such a hard question to answer! Well, it depends on many different things. You would want to do a proper intro (Dr. Jean has a great article on this I'll have to find the link though), are they both fixed, personality etc. Several people here have both but I personally only have girls.

they should get along just fine if they're both neutered.

Only the male is neutered and the female is my neighbors the reason we are going to take it is because he is a dog lover and he is not to nice to the cat so we are gonna take it!
but only the male is neutered

I have a six year old male who I recently introduced a 1 year and 2 month old female to our home, they get along very well, they play together and even sit very close to one another.

He is a very laid back and generally friendly cat though..

if the female is not spayed, i highly reccomend doing so. It prevents health problems like pyometra (sp?) which is an infection in the uterus from not having kittens, as well as different types of cancer. Not to mention avoiding the annoyances of a heat cycle, and possiblity of unwanted kittens.

To answer your question, I have a mature female cat, and recently a young male kitten was brought into the house. With a proper introduction (listed above), they now get along great! Infact I caught them cuddling today! (I even posted about it in the meet my kitty section! lol)

If the cat is not being properly treated, and you can offer it a better home, then good for you! I don't see anything wrong with that.

Mine get along, Stix was almost a year when he met baby Kota. There was hissing for a few days but now they get along great. How are their personalities? (shy, playful, moody, etc.?) I hope everything works out with them, good for you for taking her in.

When I was younger I did't think so...

I adopted my 2 cats 3 yrs ago and decided on a female and male and they get along fine(sometimes). I recommend fixing the female asap, and introducing them slowly. In my opinion how cats get along depends on their personalities, some cats are great friends and some hardly tolerate eachother. I do think it is great that you are going to get this cat just get her fixed and it should be great.

Otis and Jasmine get along just fine... Otis was just over a year when his sister Jazz came to live with him. I would strongly suggest making sure both cats are fixed, however. The female will still notice the other cat is a male, parts or not I took Jasmine to the vet before bringing her home, so can't say if you'll have problems or not if that isn't done....
