My cat occasionally emits TERRIBLE odor, what's causing it?

Hi,

I have a spayed female cat. Once every several weeks, she emits a terrible odor, sometimes with a tiny bit of mucous/liquid. It's usually on our bed when we are asleep, and we wake up and have to change the bedding because the odor is so bad. It doesn't smell like feces or urine, but is something much stronger and much worse. Afterwards, she usually smells her behind area and gives herself a little bath there. Does anybody know what it could be or what might be causing it? Her bowel movements and general health are fine.

Thanks!

That sounds like an anal gland problem. Cats have them the same as dogs do, and they sometimes have the same type of problems with them too. See your vet about it, s/he might be able to take care of it by expressing them. Sometimes there is an inflammation or infection that might need medication, which also warrants a trip to the doc.

Pearl used to "squirt" them sometimes. We just had the vet express them once in a while, but she'd still get us sometimes so we had to be careful not to touch her bottom when we wanted her to move or something.
