Default Ring around the collar

About a month ago I put collars on my cats with tags because I was moving and feared escape. They seemed to scratch it on and off quite a bit. Earlier this week I looked more closely at that are and noticed the fur was almost entirely gone in a ring around their collar and there were scabs from them scratching there constantly.

I removed the collars for now, but am wondering if there's something I can do to soothe the area. The vet advised me to keep an eye on it for a week in case it might be a rash. But is there some ointment or treatment I can apply to make the area less irritated and expedite fur regrowth?

This happens everytime I try to put a collar on one of my cats, the other is fine with the collar.
I haven't figured out a way around it, so I gave up on the collar for her.
After I take the collar off, she quits scratching so it actually heals up pretty fast, in about a week the scabs were all gone. She never gets to the point of balding in the area though, so I'm not sure how long that would take.

Did all the cats have the same reaction?

I have never had anything like this happen... I wonder if it has anything to do with the type of material the collars are made out of, or maybe they were a little too snug?

Twinkie suffered some hair loss under his collar, too. It didn't get as bad as you described. His vet said he was probably allergic to the collar. I never have gotten around to trying a different collar, but if you need to have him collared, you should probably try a collar made of a different material.

Thanks, I'll give it a week and report back my scientific findings.
