I hope you're watching the "use by" dates on these bags of food...dry foods are only good for a year from the date of manufacture, the manufacturer can ship it into distribution with only 5 months left on the date code (this info came straight from Wellness). So you can buy a food that will expire before you finish it. The risk is development of mold and excessive bacteria on the surface of the food, even in unopened bags. If you then go ahead and wet it as furryfriends suggests, you're creating an environment for the bacteria to flourish.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to confuse this issue even further....I do not recommend feeding CORE or EVO dry foods as the only food. They are extremely high protein and protein is a diuretic. So a diet that is extremely dehydrating to begin with us made even more so with the amount of protein being fed. Yes, cats need a high protein diet, but their systems are 'designed' to eat high protein within a diet that is 70% water. I would feed a typical 30-35% protein dry food (regular Wellness, Natural Balance etc.)...and monitor weight carefully.

Whether it will hurt him to be on dry for 6 months...no one can answer that. Some cats are prone to urinary issues and others aren't....although males are more prone than females. Yes, there's a risk. But hey, you obviously have a situation on your hands and you have juggle your money and do the best you can. The only thing I can say is that if you find an extra buck or two, go buy a can or two of cat food....getting any wet into him, even if it's only once or twice a week, will help.
Thank i did not check this last bag before I bought it and having to throw it out in feb. a month early when i say six months thought I mean when i open this bag it will last three months then I will open the bag i buy this time. Also it is put in a big deep freezer when I buy. So it last a little longer if the bag is going bad i only pull out a week worth of food out of the bag. Keep the bag in the freezer.

Could I could do a couple of cans of evo a month maybe two and make it last throughout the month.
like four bucks worth. that would be 8 meals of evo. which would come out to two a week. that would be a sneak that I would come up with some extra money.

Oh i do have a huge emergency pet fund. over 1000 bucks and all pets are on pet insurence. that was paid for by my mother thank goodness. for two years each. So vetting is not a issue

Ok so if I have to feed all dry it would be better to feed him Regular wellness witch is the dry kibble he is eating now the indoor formula has triple cranberry.

The salmon formula is good.

I dont like the blue bag

If I can feed wet twice a week is that better then nothing? If i bought one can of Evo for a week I could get four meals out of this. Or make it to where that one can last him a week.

If I can find a spot to buy a bail of hay for my rabbit i would save over 45 a month on that alone so maybe I can get 8 bucks worth of food a month. or five cans would be ten.

I need to say this there are a lot of factors tot his storm my rabbit and Boss my cat are the most expensive to feed. I spend 15 a month on my dog. So if i can find a bail for 6 buck instead of 45 for Oxbow a motnh I may be able to pull off a few cans a month. But also if i have some money to buy cans after formula and stuff is bought diapers and such. I will buy some

I will be buying everything for them at my house is second hand stuff from family friend freecycle.

Ok so i crunched some munbers I can go up to 18 a month so what I am going to do it find wellness coupons and start buying at petco instead of my mom and pop store.

And i found a vet clinic that sells cans of evo for 1.76 a can so I can buy twelve and when he runs out he runs out thats is three months worth of food. so at his adult weight which i think will be about ten pound he has not been weighed in months so I am guessing off pickking the twins up he is about 9 now.

OMG do NOT buy grass hay from Oxbow!! And then shipping! Yikes. (I used to have rabbits and was a founding member of the House Rabbit Society, BTW. )

No matter WHERE you are there are horse people. Look on Craigslist (farm and garden) for someone selling grass hay (preferably no alfalfa, for rabbits as well as horses). Or perhaps you have a friend who has horses? I pay $5.00 a bale loaded into my hayloft for excellent grass hay cut just down the road from me. I'm sure you can find the same.

Oh yeah! I got a chinchilla and I got him timothy hay from a farmer an hour away from me. 50lb small bale for $4.50CDN. Even though it was far and I had to use gas to get there, it was worth it because it was fresh.

Ok so i dont know how many people are going to kill me

I bought Taste of the wildI was able to get enough can with that price for him to get the same amount he gets now.

15 pounds of Taste of The wild was 25 at my local mom and pop. then 2 bucks a can for evo I bought two cases.

I know about the internet website and could have saved some but kieth does not charge me as much.

So It will be 25 a month but hubby and me desided that we could take putting 25 bucks out every three months from the emergency fund after he read this thread.

Plus I found the taste of the wild its grain free. and I got a huge 33 pound bag of taste of the wild for my dog because it had ripped for 10 bucks so it equals out this time around.

Hopefully it will next time also.

Is there anything I should know about taste of the wild and is $25 for 15 pounds a good deal

PBJ, do you have a Trader Joe's near you? They have their own brand of canned food for only 59 cents a can, and it's good quality food. Unfortunately, you can't order it online.

I feel katz-n-flocken dry to my cats, which is a brand made by solid gold. They love it... it's made with lamb. I'm a pretty big fan of the stuff... I think it's the sparkly purple bag that it comes in that does it for me. For the fur-kids... it's gotta be the lamb, because they are crazy over it! One 10$ bag lasts me at least a month for one cat, so for three months that would put you under your 32$ limit

Ingredients:
Lamb, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Millet, Menhaden Fish Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Rice Bran, Canola Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Garlic, Amaranth, Blueberries, Dried Chicory Root, Taurine, Carotene, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, (a chelated source of iron), Zinc Proteinate (a chelated source of zinc), Copper Proteinate (a chelated source of copper), Manganese Proteinate (a chelated source of manganese), Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid.

This brand DOES have taurine. I can hardly imagine solid gold would forget to put that in their food, it's a no-brainer for cat food and I'm pretty sure it's a requirement! I bet it's just a mistake on the label.

I wanted to thank everyone.

as said earlier

I bought a bag of Taste of The Wild and was able to buy the normal amount of Evo. As I got a 30 pound bag of Taste of the Wild for my dog as it tore for ten bucks. So i save enough. that is worked out even for this month.

So lucky they are good for almost 6 months hopefully it works out again.

And I found a feed store for my rabbit where I found hay his litter and a lot cheaper pellets for a great price also i am saving over 100 bucks a month on pet stuff. Which I will be able to stick to even after the girls go back with there mom
