Default Evangers

I recently attended a pet expo and picked up a few cans of Evanger's cat food. The ingredients look good... but I did a search on the forum and came up with the disturbing posts about the issues with the FDA.

Now I'm torn... I hate to use this food if it's going to be dangerous but was so excited to find an affordable canned food with good ingredients. Does anyone use Evangers?

I did have my cats on raw for a time but Ace had another struvite crystal blockage so I had no choice but to switch him onto the Hills c/d. I couldn't keep Bogey on raw because he wanted to part of it once he smelled his brother's canned food. I've been looking for a good canned food for Bogey. Up until this point, he's been on Natural Balance Chicken & Liver Pate. The Evangers looked better "on paper," however.

So far, I've tried the turkey & squash, organic chicken, and beef tips & gravy. Bogey loved the first two but flat out refused to eat the beef tips & gravy. That is strange/concerning because this is a cat that will eat just about anything. I have to admit the beef tips & gravy looked positively disgusting and had a weird, paste like consistency.... completely different from the other two flavors.

If your struvite cat is still on the Hills c/d, switch it from that to the Royal Canin Urinary S/O, its better than the hills. Royal Canin is the closest thing the vet has to better food. Keep away from any fish ingredients also, and give lots of canned food to keep the urine diluted. My cat also suffers from FLUTD and I have kept her away from fish for a year, and there have been no problems since, and I did also switch to an all high quality fish free diet. Some good cans include : Natural Balance (green pea and duck, green pea and venison, chicken and green pea, turkey and giblets). Wellness Core, Evo 95% (they do not contain fish, but the regular Evo one does, Holistic Select (read the labels as some have fish), Performatrin Ultra, Performatrin (regular) they are both Pet Valu brands, not sure where you live, Ziwipeak, there is also Merricks and Before Grain, however my cats do not like them, but I know some do. Personally I don't like Evangers, and they have had quite a few recalls. And they also put a lot of fruits and veggies that cats dont need. Cats are soley meat eaters, so try to look for foods that arent packed with unneccessary fruits and veggies.

I wouldn't recommend Evangers because of their inclusion of menadione which is a questionable ingredient for pet foods. It has been outlawed for use in human foods, but not in pets foods. I figure if human's should ingest it, then my cats shouldn't either.

The cans I have do not have menidione. I do always check for that.

My cats were on Wellness Core when Ace first blocked. I'm frightened of that food because of it. It upset me because I fed a crappy food for a long time and the cats were fine, and then I switched to a good one and one of them got a major medical issue (twice).

For some reason, Bogey immediately vomits up anything containing green pea. The only NB food he hasn't puked on yet is the Chicken & Liver Pate.

I'm frankly a little confused about the Evangers. In comparing labels, they have far less fruits/veggies/fillers than the NB varities I've tried.

You're right about the menadione...I was looking at the PFD site for the ingredients...it's easier than dealing with every manufacturer's website. Anyway, they had it listed, but now that I look at the Evanger's website it doesn't. Maybe it was used at one time and they're removed it.
