Licking problem

Stretch our cat approx 1 1/2 to 2 year old cat is licking all the fur off his tummy and leg. It is so bad it looks like welts and sometimes bleeds. I took him to the vet and was told it probably is an allergy. He is now restricted to a diet with no dyes in it. Have tried this for about 3 weeks with no visible resoluts. Doc wants to see all the ingrediants in the foods he eats.
Has anyone else seen this problem and what was the cause. If it is the diet what food can he eat?

What food did the vet tell you to feed the cat? If it is a vet diet, I would switch off of that and try the Natural Balance allergen/grain free formulas.
