Thanks all for the comments.
Do you have any suggestions for a fund raiser? Is it even legal to do so?

Update on cat:

No surgery yet, but her lip is doing great! We treated her ear mites, gave rabies vac, distemper, and we washed her up. She is now living in our spare room, and will be mingling with our other cats soon. I dont have a digi cam, but i promise to get some pics from my cellphone up soon. So adorable!

I've seen people post on Craigslist asking for donations, and the ones that aren't flagged are the ones who ask that the donations be made directly to the vet for the animal, seems less like a scam.

On a side note:

I wanted to comment about the purring, some cats who are in great pain purr to release endorphins to combat the pain.

I was very interested to read this as when I found (poor apparently abandoned)Jack on my porch with his poor eyeball hanging out, he ran up to me purring away. I was amazed that he could be purring in that condition. The vet did say he was in alot of pain and he was purring all during his exam as well. I guess this explains what that was all about!

Ack! Poor Jack!
I'll tell ya, I was *very* surprised to see Snookie purring with such a horribly mangled and rotting leg. I called our vet and Hubby and I drove her over, purring all the way, for our elderly neighbor. Vet had thought he could wait until staff came in the morning for the amputation but when he saw her, he decided to perform the surgery right away. Hubby and I left to go pick him up a burger and by the time we got back, he had things mostly prepped, was ready to eat and then could clean up and have Snookie prepped. We offered to stay and assist (NO experience, but wanted to offer) and he declined, saying it would be a fairly straightforward surgery and he expected no complications. Snookie came home about 4 days later and Owen was VERY happy to have his kitty back.

Aww poor Snookie! The vet operated right away on Jack as well, lost his eye and man parts at the same time. They are such troopers.
