Default Black Mold! Sooooo scared!

To keep a long story short, when moving boxes from my closet today we found black mold in my carpet *gag* . This mold was likely caused by the flood in our apartment this spring due to poor pipes and our property management company's worse clean up job. Maintenance has been called, the room has been shut off and the only time I plan on entering the room is to get my work clothing. I can deal with having to throw a bunch of stuff away or the company blaming this on us and charging us, I can even deal with not breathing well (it could be from that, stress, a coming cold or even because I just quit smoking) but I cannot deal with the cats having health problems. Sinatra sleeps in that closet everyday and Nutter went in the closet today right as we uncovered it and tried to kick her out. I am more worried about Sinatra just because he sleeps in there. The vet will be called as soon as they open tomorrow and he will be examined asap on their end but I am so terrified!! Has anyone ever had this happen? Did their cat die? I am so scared for my baby!!

From what I read in a quick on-line search, if your cats aren't showing symptoms, they're probably okay, but a vet check-up is a good idea.

You shouldn't have to pay for any of the repairs for this.

First, if you are keeping your work clothes in there you probably shouldn't. Black mold spores can travel on clothing, fur, and by air. I'd keep that room completely shut off and disinfect anything that was stored in there before it has contact with anyone/anything.

I agree with Marie, if they aren't showing any symptomps like coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, lethargy, or allergy like symptoms i wouldn't panic (although if it were Mow I'd still see a vet soonish).

I'd definately keep them out of that room though and have it seen to asap. Keep us updated on what the vet says. I can imagine your worry, I tend to panic pretty easy when it comes to MowMow's health.

Yeah, your kitties will probably be fine, although I would keep them away from it. Cats are really tough. I have seen them recover from serious illness and injury and it amazes me.

They show us so much love and affection that it's easy to forget that they come from a long line of fierce hunters and fighters. I've had ferals that could rip up a pit bull.

Your cats have strong immune systems from millions of generations of kitties that came before them

Basically, Cats are pretty much tough azzes that can kick a lot of butt. They only let you see their soft side because you are special to them and they love you.

The hurricane water supply I keep in my closet leaked. I found black stuff that I assume was mold along the edge of the carpet. I used Tiles Mold remover.

I lived. The kitties seem fine. The Tilex got rid of it.

Well Sinatra does cough sometimes but it is only every few days or so. My carpet is being replaced on Wednesday (I'm getting my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday so that will be a fun time) and everything in my room is in the process of being washed.

Are you sure it's not mildew? Mildew can be black & is caused from a moisture buildup. Either way, you definitely should not have to pay for the damages!
