I got a siamese kitten when he was 14 weeks old. He is now 7 months old. Ever since he was about 4 months old he has loved anything fuzzy. Socks, blankets, cat toys.
the Problem is that he chews and tears these items up. He then eats it, IE plays with socks or his cat toys and chews on them and eats it. He has thrown up a few times and it mainly consists of whatever sock or toy he has gotten to. Any advise? I hate to have to completely take away all of his toys. There is nothing much left that he can play with. Help please! thanks |

Unfortunately Siamese are known to be "wool eaters". Just something they want to do and don't really know why. It is better to take away anything "fuzzy" or material that he relishes demolishing and eating than have her get an intestinal blockage. If he is vomits, becomes lethargic and doesn't pass poop, are signs of blockage and an immediate trip to the vet. So to prevent spending big $$$$ on a surgery to remove a sock or whatever, you'll have to take away anything he's attracted to eat. Get him one of those "Kong" toys (small dog size) and put in some treats. Get him other types of toys to play with, such as a paper ball or ping pong ball. Give him interactive play with a "teaser toy" or "Da Bird". Even an empty box with a curly twist tie can fascinate. I'm sure some Siamese owners will come on and suggest some other things.

I had this problem with one of my siamese mixes. Apollo almost completely devoured a felt-type material mouse that the shelter sent him home with. I had to take the remains of it away from him.
He thankfully grew out of most of his fabric-eating (although both cats still chew on it of course) so hopefully yours will as well. But in the interim, see if you can find some very durable toys. I've had some good luck with some of the Petlinks toys. He didn't tear any of those completely apart, although he did pull off/eat any feathers that came on them. You may want to see if you can get some of them that don't have feathers or dangly bits that he could chew off or pull off. The actual body fabric of most of their toys seems pretty sturdy. I haven't tried Kong toys yet, but that's worth a shot. Just keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't chew off/swallow any of the rubber. My cats both have a habit of trying to eat hard things like plastic as well. Paper balls are a good suggestion. Mine love crumpled up pieces of paper, and ideally if eaten, that should be less harmful as I believe it'd be broken down easily. I know they make edible paper that's not been treated with chemicals. If eating paper is a concern, you could try some of that. Ping pong balls have also been a great success with my cats. Their shape/material makes them difficult to chew on/damage, but the cats looove chasing them around.
