A few years ago, my cat had a life-saving perineal urethrostomy. I don't regret having gone forward with the surgery. Martin was in great pain and distress, and he would have died without medical intervention.
Martin has become increasingly prone to recurring UTI's. This doesn't surprise me, given the urethral opening's proximity to bacterial contamination. Also, Martin's FIV-positive and, thus, vulnerable to opportunistic infections. I use a kind, capable veterinarian who treats Martin's UTI's. But, this vet is clueless about preventive measures -- care, diet, and other holistic approaches that might prevent the condition. Any advice out there?
