Hi all, long time no post
Question about canned food choices. Our kitties are both fed the same diet -- Purina UR dry in the morning, and Science Diet Optimal Care canned food (chicken flavor) in the evenings. The cats are fed separately due to different weight needs, and there is absolutely no free-feeding ever... only rations. I recently had Quinn's urine tested at the vet, because we only recently started adding the canned food and he has a history of struvite crystal problems. Everything looked wonderful except the urine pH, which was 7 instead of 6-6.5. So now, at the vet's recommendation, I'm looking to switch up the canned food from Science Diet to something else that could help acidify his urine back into that desired range. Does anyone have any suggestions for canned cat foods (preferably OTC) that are known to be neutral pH/acidifying or especially beneficial for urinary health? Thanks in advance And before it comes up, let me say that the Purina UR dry food will stay in his diet. I know that an all-canned diet would be preferable and that the Rx diets are far from ideal in terms of nutrition. However, I travel for work, so I feel most comfortable if the kitties are acclimated to a "known quantity"-type dry food that can be portioned out in an auto-feeder in case my lovely volunteer cat-sitter is unable to swing a wet food meal for some reason. |
