Default Pain at Incision Site.

Hi everyone,

As most of you know, but for those that don't. Elfie had a csection 5 days ago.

I told the vet about her pain and she said it was normal, to keep giving her the pain meds and antibiotics. I think it's because she won't stay down. She's wanting to walk around and stretch. I put her back but she comes right out so I feel bad. I know she needs a break from the kittens. She gets 0.9ml amoxicillan twice a day and 0.9ml Torbugesic Elixer Strength every 8 hours as needed for pain.

Also, she won't stop licking her incision. It's starting to look like it will split again if she doesn't stop. I try to make her stop and she won't. I put the e collar on for an hour in hopes of it helping but she scrapes it along her belly and stabs the kittens with it trying to take care of them so I took it off.

Is there anything else I can do that you guys know of for the tenderness? And to make her stop licking it? Thank you! You all have been truly great helping me with the kittens and Elfie.

I forgot another concern. Elfie IS a great Mom. However, her behavior has changed each time I've had to take her to the vet. I'm afraid if I have to continue to take her she will abandon them or something.

I doubt Elfie will abandon them at this stage, so don't worry about that.

As for Elfie's constant licking her incision, yes this is a problem!. Perhaps putting something on her to prevent her licking it. The only thing I can think of is a tube top but that would likely be too snug and wouldn't let air circulate around the incision. Maybe a child's Tshirt might work? Something to cover the incision, but you may have to tape the bottom to her fur so she can't pull it up. When kitties are hungry and meowing for milk, roll up the shirt until they've had their fill, are satisfied and sleepy and then roll the shirt down and tape it again. Might work, really grasping at straws here. Had only one C-section with my girls, but the queen didn't bother with her incision. She was too interested in licking her kitties as I recall.

How's Elfie with her kitties? Wasn't quite sure what you meant by "her behavior had changed". Has her incision healed yet?

Oh I forgot about this post! I'm sorry I posted an update in " Finally. Meet Elfie's Kittens" The pain is considerably less. Now it's just itching because it's healing. She doesn't like that at all. So she comes to me to be "scratched" there so I rub lightly AROUND the incision and that appeases her for 5 minutes. lol

She's more restless, that's what I meant by her behavior changes. She still is, she doesn't spend half as much time with them as she did. She wants me constantly. She feeds, cleans and watches them. But she doesn't lay in there as much.

Sounds all normal behavior to me. Her restlessness is connected with your other post about her moving Mini McNasty under the bed. They do get restless after a week and want to move the kittens somewhere else....all instinctive normal behavior. As the kitties continue to feed well and grow, she will spend less and less time in the box, probably just to give them a feed and wash them up. Some momcats are more diligent about this than others, but her behavior is in the normal range.

Glad to hear her incision is healing and she's stopped licking it I presume. That's pretty cute of her to come to you to get it scratched. Everything sounds great. All the best!
