So, Boo had a lose tooth in the front of her mouth, one of her fangs.
The vet had us consider extraction - but even if we had an appt for next week its already out. so im kinda freaking out here, i dont want her to get infected - i dont know if shes in pain or not. I was giving her her allergy pill (from the other side on purpose), and it came out as she was fighting the pill. Im so scared now and of course the vet is closed until monday. is there anything i can put on it (salt water?) to make she theres no infection, what about the pain?? shes already on prednizone for allergies, so im hoping that helps the tooth site as well inflammation wise. help!!! our local 24 hour vet said to just keep an eye on her, cant just sell us antiboitics without being seen. she was just seen on thursday by regular vet. he knew is was lose but didnt want to pull on it and aggrivate things. help???? she didnt hiss or yelp or anything - actually didnt seem to notice untl her mouth felt different to her tongue. Shes not going to hide or anything like they do when theyre in pain or scared. shes acting normal |

i was also just wondering, is that tooth essential to her bite? will she have jaw pain now?? she can still eat without that tooth right?? (luckily she didnt swallow it and it came out, so i dont need to worry about it getting lodged anywhere)
I am considering going out and buying a babies super soft brush and trying to brush her teeth from now on, but i dont want to brush that spot now and irritate it if its not already. shes still acting normal - licking at her belly (allergy spot). was just nuzzling me and even gave me some licks. |

should be fine until you can get it looked at. Cats lose teeth all the time.
Just keep an eye on her...a cat I had only had 3 teeth left (pulled due to stomatitis) and she was fine. Just keep an eye on it. Was the tooth fully intact or did it break off? She probably isn't feeling any worse than she would if the vet had pulled it

p.s. if it was already that lose that it could fall out on its own I would think any potential infection danger has passed. The tooth would have been out of the bone for some time to just fall out

Dont worry about her not being able to eat. Fangs are used for tearing, not chewing.
I cant imagine that having a tooth fall out would be much different from a humans falling out.. or removed for that matter. Its possible that the root has already died and perhaps there is not much pain there at all. When we get our teeth pulled at the dentist we are given pain killers for pain, IB profen for any swelling (my guess) but nothing for antibiotics. Im sure everything will be just fine, take a deep breath..and exhale

It was fully intact. But im not entirely sure what roots look like on a cats tooth. But i can tell the colour difference from the part that was in her gums and the part that was always exposed. (actually, the always exposed part was whiter).
I know cats lose their baby teeth and we usually dont know about it, i was trying to think of it that way. I just want to do what i can to save the rest of her teeth. and make sure shes not in pain/can eat. she hasnt been crazy about treats lately, but maybe because the tooth hanging there didnt feel great?? I am hoping she feels better now, if anything. shes been eating though, ive seen her at the bowl and chewing (and drinking). i was reading the prednizone sheet and it said it does help with inflammation, which is what infection is, right? i hope?? i have the tooth though, to bring to the vets on Monday to make sure theres no bigger medical thing happening. brushing her teeth would be a good step though right? She wouldnt like it i know, but in order to save her other teeth? |

having some dental issues myself....if a tooth falls out there is a problem in the gums/bone probably something brushing won't help with. Not saying brushing won't hurt but if she actually had a tooth fall out it's probably more in the line of peridontal disease which brushing won't help.
Trust me I know this....I dealt with peridontal disease since I was a teen and lost my upper teeth 6 years ago to it. My front teeth were getting loose due to bone loss. I've gone to the dentist every 6 months since I was 11 years old so dental care was not my problem. I haven't had a cavity since I was 19 and had to lose my upper teeth when I was 46. Anyway...so I'm familar with losing teeth and not from the lack of care. If she has bone loss (which is the only thing I can think of as to why a tooth would simply fall out unless there was an injury) you might want to have a complete blood panel done. No panic...it happens. Could also be genetics. On the eating thing - one of my cats had a cracked tooth and he was eating fine. I didn't even know his tooth was cracked until he had a vet exam and the vet spotted it.

She was initially a rescue - eating literally garbage for about a month (at least thats how her poop smelled initially). so that doesnt help im sure.
But because that was nearly 5 years ago now, that tooth just wanting to start coming out say 6 months ago (when we first noticed it, but tried to move it and it wasnt loose then). we only knew it was loose on thursday when the vet tried moving it again. its just so odd. Is it possible (like people) that that one tooth just didnt have a good root on it? or maybe a cavity got out of control? Thats what makes me think brushing would help. we never brush simbas teeth either but weve had him from 4 weeks, he was on mothers milk right to our milk substitite, and his teeth are fine. so im thinking the eating garbage made them worse to begin with. she is healthy though otherwise, just got checked out. |
