Default Please help!

My kitten, Gadget, has been constipated for a while. He can pass small, very firm pieces, but that's about it. Today, he hasn't been able to pass anything and on his side I can feel a lump. I'm not sure if the lump is just poo that needs to pass or what. His regular vet is only open from 8:30-10am and then from 4-6pm. Any ideas or suggestions? So far I've used mineral oil and milk of magnesia (at different times). I can't find pure pumpkin anywhere.

Thanks!

Try Laxatone, or any hairball remedy. If you can't find any, you can use Vasoline.

Till you see the vet be sure your kitten eats wet canned food. You might want to add a bit of water in the wet food too. Please dont use litter that is clumping. kittens eat it and it can kill them. Use World Best or SWheat type litters. One of my blind kitties that was adopted has very firm stools. The vet told them to use pumpkin or a product called Miralax (sp?) a tiny bit in her food. I hope you get answers from your vet.

Thank you all for your replies. Gadget has some other problems, and the last time he saw the vet, heb only told me to give him a few drops of mineral oil. I think his problem is much bigger than that though. He has never had normal stool and constantly strains. He's never gotten to the point of vomiting yet, and I'm hoping it doesn't get to that point.

If you feed Gadget any type of kibble, stop. Feed him exclusively canned food, preferably mixed with some warm water to increase his hydration. Constipation is often caused by dehydration, and kibble is dehydrating. Of course if kibble is the only thing that Gadget will eat, then you'll need to continue to feed him kibble while you transition him to canned (or a homemade diet).

Is Gadget a manx, by any chance? From what I understand, manx cats often experience these types of problems.

I've been keeping him strictly on wet food and have been mixing water in as well to keep him hydrated as much as possible. I'm seriously lost as to what it could be. He's on amoxicillin right now, and I read that it mainly causes diarrhea, but wondering if it could cause constipation as well. I'm probably just freaking out over nothing. He still as an appetite and plays with me. I massaged his belly and it didn't seem as though he was in any kind of pain or discomfort. He's not a Manx, but I was wondering about megacolon. I know it's not common in kittens, but I know the vet will have to rule that out. Thanks again to everyone for your replies.

Hahah, okay.. so I really was freaking out about nothing. He had gone to sleep earlier after some intense play time, so I figured I'd come out here on the computer while he rested. I just walked back in there. Massive pile. He looked at me with sleepy eyes. I laid my hand on his back, laughing and he was insta-purr. Thanks everyone!

Been there. Done that. I always worry myself sick and MowMow usually just sorts it out himself.
