Default Neutering Question

I know I asked before about how early to speauter well Im back. My baby boy was born yesterday and i am thinking about going ahead and making his neutering appt now in advance. About how long after I get him should I wait? Should i go ahead and neuter him? Or should I wait for him to settle in first? If I wait how long should I wait. I want to minimize any chance he may have of spraying in the house. Basically the most I ever want him to do is squat in the box.

He isnt coming home until he is at least 8 weeks old. Im wondering about if I should get it done almost as soon as he comes home, or wait until he is adjusted to his new home and the other critters in the household.

2 months/2 lbs seems to be the general rule I believe.

I would give him a few weeks to settle in and form a bond with you before having him neutered. 15 wks. or almost 4 mos. of age is a good time. Most kitties that age are too busy playing to think about spraying.

I hope he doesn't come home until he is at least 12 weeks old. He needs the time with mom & littermates for socialization skills.

I think 4-5 months is a good time to neuter, no later than 6 months.

I agree with doodlebug in my hopes he won't have to leave his mom until he's 12-14 week old.

As for neutering my vet is also a fan of the 2 months/2 lbs rule of thumb since that means the brain changes associated with puberty are unlikely to have even started a tiny bit.

I work with rescues, so we need to get them spayed as soon as possible, so they can go home. But we do 8 weeks for boys, 12 for girls, either way they have to be at least 2 lbs before we will do it. If they never get over 2 lbs, we make a case by case decision.

The general rule here is 2lbs. I thought that seemed a bit young but all of the rescue groups in my area go by the 2lbs rule.

As with circumcision in human boys and ear piercings for human girls, every Dr is going to have a different opinion. I would call and talk to your vet to see what they recommend.
