Its an infection caused by a protozoa called giardia lamblia. You (humans) can get it from drinking untreated water or from contact with contaminated feces, and it causes diarrhea for a really long time. It sucks, I do not recommend getting it. Don't drink from the creek! However if I'm close to the headwaters I will still do it, cause it tastes so awesome.
Cats get it I think from feces. It also causes diarrhea in them. I don't know if kitty giardia can transfer into human giardia. That would suck if it did though.
