Old wives tale. It causes no more damage than dry food. If you are worried about keeping teeth clean you could always supplement with a raw chicken wing tip or some raw gizzards on a regular basis.

Cost is a major issue for me as well right now and I buy the large cans of Evo 95% formula as well as California Naturals (both made by Natura). I've also started rotating in some By Nature. Those were pretty affordable for me.
