Oh, I am so, so sorry! I didn't realize that Honey was young. Sudden onset renal failure in a young cat is more likely to be acute renal failure (ARF) than chronic renal failure (CRF), though the treatments are the same. ARF is often triggered by some type of toxin. Antifreeze is a common one, though there are many toxins in our human living environments to which our four-leggeds can accidentally become exposed.

You got Honey to the vet when you realized she was in trouble, and you got her to an ER when you realized she needed additional veterinary help. Sometimes the save just isn't under our control, and that's such a bitter pill to swallow. I share your heartbreak and sincerely wish that you and Honey hadn't suffered this tragedy.

I wish you and your wife a peaceful grief.

She had just turned 6 years old. She was an exceptionally friendly and talkative cat, one who made constant eye contact with you and seemed unbelievably human. Honey had her moments of bad behavior too, but we miss those just as much as the good ones. We haven't had kids yet, and she has been our only companion during these first few years of marriage. I can't even put into words how much it hurts us to lose her.

Here are a couple pictures of Honey:

So sorry for your loss, I've experienced on multiple occasions the loss of a beloved cat that had been with me for a long time.
They are child like and it's our job as pet owners to care for them and when they get ill and die we feel that we've fail in our obligation to them.
We can't prevent death we can only provide for them the best we can.
My great wish is that when I pass over to the other side I'll be reunited with all the beloved pets who've shared my life.

That's exactly the way we feel. It's really hard to not blame ourselves because we still have no idea how this happened. I just hope she still knows how much we love her and that we can see her again.

Six yrs old is middle-aged for a cat, so it's certainly possible that she could have had either acute or chronic renal failure. Sometimes a cat can have an acute renal crisis that resolves into chronic renal failure. That happened with one of my CRF cats. You will probably never know what triggered Honey's renal crisis. The one thing you DO know is that she is no longer suffering in a sick body. You also know that Honey knew you loved her. You may second guess the way she died, but don't ever second guess the way she lived and loved.

Years ago, I lost an old goat who had been with me for 16 yrs. I heard Abbie bleat and caught occasional glimpses of her out of the corner of my eye for months after her passing. Her physical body was gone, but she stuck around for a while, nonetheless. There's an energy that survives death, and I believe that our energies will be reunited.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Cutie was 7 when he passesd a few months ago. He was my best friend. I know exactly how you feel and I still feel guilty and keep thinking what if. But you have to believe you did everything right, you realized your cat needed help you went to the vet, you took care of your baby all the way to the end. My heart goes out to you and your wife and I send you lots of virtual hugs. We will see our furbabies in that bridge when our time comes.
