Default Poop! Real poop!! Woohoo for poop!!!

Sorry about the title but I am SO VERY HAPPY right now!

For the first time in OVER A MONTH - Apollo had his first SOLID POO today!!!

I slowly transitioned his food from the Hill's crap to Wellness Chicken & Rice something or other.. Which, he only ate for a short period of time. I've been giving him more canned food than dry for the past week. And I've been adding in extra water to it each time just to make sure.

I started noticing he was MUCH more gassy when he'd hop in his litter box with the diarrhea. There was a 2 day period that his poop was a little more watery than it had been, less pudding like and more liquid, but not completely liquid. The gas and the change in his diarrhea made me nervous... So I stopped giving him the dry food last night.

I finally found a small pet shop that carries higher quality food, dry and canned. I went specifically to pickup Evo, but they only had 2 kinds; kitten canned food and I think it was venison and beef.. I didn't want to try either of those on him, so I grabbed more Wellness flavors and a few cans of Wellness Core. My mother and I have been arguing over Blue Wilderness and blah blah blah. She says he needs dry food to "firm up his stool" and canned food is going to continue giving him diarrhea. I just nodded and smiled and picked up the canned food instead. As we were leaving, she picked up a huge $34 bag of that Wellness Chicken & Rice formula, against everything I said to her. WHatever, she paid for it, lol.

Yesterday, the vet called and told me she wants me to take him completely off dry food (FINALLY!) which I've been slowly doing anyway. She also wants to give him SubQ fluids.. vitamin B or something? I didn't get 100% of what she said, she was in a hurry and it was already 5pm as they were closing. She's supposed to call back sometime today to actually explain more. Theyve been closed most of today for a staff meeting but I've already left a message about his good poop.

Anywho - I don't want to get too excited and jinx my poor boy, but real, firm poop?! THAT is awesome! I'm going to monitor him the next few days and watch for any change.

(I actually pay attention when he hops in his litter box. I listen for difference in the noises as he goes - I know, gross and I need a life outside of his litterbox, but this has been a LONG couple of months. I noticed just an hour ago that he peed for days, then he moved to the back of his box and sat like he was going to go #2, and I heard no gas, no liquids, just 2 thunks. I immediately started woohooing and dancing and I know he thinks I'm friggin crazy. I scooped his box and whaddaya know? Lots of pee and 2 chunks of good poops. )

I like your post Shenanigans - it's great news! To be excited about poo ...well, firm poo! It's not gross - I think yo uhave to check your pets poo once in a while. It's an indicator of good health, so congratulations. I tell my sister all the time how my kids have great poo! I think they're so beautiful that even their poo is beautiful. I know, I know...get a life! I have one - it's my furry kids!

So, he's eaten nothing but canned food, and his poop is staying firm.

Should I be worried that he isn't pooping as much? He used to go 2-3 times a day, and now with the pred, he's been going once a day. Since the other day when he had his FIRST firm poo, hes only gone 2x since then. Today was a couple little pellets. Not small like rabbit pellets, but small ball-sized. Could this just be due to his insides calming and healing, getting back to normal?

I wouldn't worry a tiny bit at all! Poop once a day is the right frequency (same frequency as my Metoo, but Meatball poops every 1 1/2 day). 2-3 times a day is too much. Considering Appollo had diarrhea, no wonder.

Small ball-sized is a bit off from normal. Normal one should be toothpaste shaped. But maybe he is still recovering, so I won't worry about that at this point.

Congrat on getting real progress here!

Congrats! I know how it is when you get happy with poops. I know I was estactic with Miu when she wasn't going #2 very well then all of sudden I see some nicely formed poop.

I wouldn't worry about the frequency either since with higher quality food, you would get less 'waste' anyways.

Both of mine are on 1/2 wet, 1/2 raw and they poop about once a day. Sometimes Miu will do once every 1.5 days.

YAY FOR GOOD POOPS!!! From what I've read and seen with multiple species, the less poop means the body is able to use more of the food going in - as long as they are eating well, that is.

If you give a cat 5 ounces of food A, and they poop 2 ounces, that means their body could absorb only 3 ounces or 60% of the food. Then with food B, 5 ounces fed and only 1/2 ounce poop? That means 90% of the food was absorbed - usually meaning healthier food, too.

As long as he's not constipated, I'd say you shouldn't have to worry a bit. CONGRATS!!!
