It's being reported through several venues that cat owners are seeing their cats sicken and (in some cases) die while eating Purina One cat kibble. The initial symptoms seem to be vomiting, lack of appetite, increased thirst, and diarrhea, eventually progressing to intermittent weakness of back legs, lethargy and worse. Blood tests aren't picking anything up during initial stages, but whatever is happening seems to be affecting the liver and kidneys of the cats.
I don't normally give a heads-up on warnings like this, but this seems to be effecting enough cat owners that it warrants a mention for those feeding Purina One. From "Pictures of Cats": Potential Purina One Cat Food Problem From "Heart of a Healer": WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill Here's hoping none of our wonderful kitties are affected!!!!! Purina is just about as much "junk" food as Friskies, 9-Lives, and many other cheaper ones. Even the "naturals" recipe isn't all that great.
As I'm on a budget, I can't afford good stuff like Wellness or Blue Buffallo...the stuff I get has no corn, no by-products and is $19 for 25lbs. Chicken, chicken meal and brown whole rice are the first ingredients. I think it does have soy, but Paizly tolerates rice and soy MUCH better than she does corn. |

Costco kibble. Kirkland Signature Maintenance Cat food
As far as I know, Sam's Club doesn't have their own cat food. Wal-Mart's brand seems to be Special Kitty, which is complete junk. Hopefully work picks up after the holidays, as I really want to switch to an all canned food diet for my kitties. Right now they're getting 9-lives (only certain flavors, as some have corn gluten) in the morning, but I'd like to get better stuff like Nutro Max and maybe eventually afford Nature's Variety or somethin' like that. |
