Default Need Some Advice...

The other day a black cat showed up at my house. I didn't want to let her in my home because I have two cats already but she meowed at my door all night and the next day too so I let her in for fear of getting in trouble with my neighbor. (who happens to be my landlord.) So I let her in and realized that she's not the nicest cat on the block. She's very unpredictable, as in she will be sweet and lovey then suddenly lash out and bite-- 3 different times in fact. I figured maybe she was scared of a new place with new people and cats, so I gave her another chance. Well, while she was asleep on my lap I noticed something kind of strange. She would go limp in her sleep, her head would be floppy her legs, everything. She would be in an REM like state, she would twitch like cats do when they dream ( I dunno if they're really dreaming, but that's what people say is going on.), and her eyes would move behind her lids. Well, you could move her, poke her, just about anything and she wouldn't wake up at least not after several attempts. Then she would suddenly lapse back to, like her head would jolt up and she was as alert as could be. She's done this several times since she showed up to me, but last night she was in one of her episodes and came to and seriously attacked me, she bit me and drew blood and her claws were dug into me so deep they were very difficult to remove then, with her claws still stick in my hand, she fell right back to sleep! It hurt so so so bad. Well, this is where it becomes difficult. I was looking for a home for Jazz (that's what I've took to calling her) but now I'm putting that off because I don't feel comfortable giving her to someone. She's unpredictable and could really hurt someone, and honestly I can't keep her. I have 5 cats already and I'm sad to say this, but I'm afraid of her. She scares me and the people I live with. What am I to do? If I can't keep her and I can't give her away? The shelters here are pretty much full up and with her being the way she is- I'm not so sure they would even take her. I want to do the right thing. I actually looked up some of the things she was doing on the internet, and she has a lot of symptoms of feline narcolepsy, which until now I had no idea cats could have. Silly me. I can't afford to take her to the vet, Bat just got over being sick and I'm fresh out of cash. I feel bad for having to say it, but I can't take care of every needy animal that comes to me...no matter how hard it is to admit that. :'( I just want to know what to do, I'm so confused. I want Jazz to have a future, but I don't want anyone to get hurt.

Hi Heyheyhayley
I wish I had a good answer for you, that is very kind of you to even take him in to try and find a home. Reading this, it reminded me of a E-mail I got some time back, so I found it and am going to post, just remember its only a joke, but I guess you could use this and put him on craiglist HA HA
Ferocious Attack Kitten

Date: 2008-06-02, 7:10PM CDT

Ferocious attack kitten is available for adoption to any home willing to accept him.

This destructive kitty has been trained as a proud warrior and will fiercely defend your house, even against you. Well-trained since 10-weeks of age to attack anything in his presence, he will protect your family from evil things, including the following:

* insects

* other trained attack kittens

* babies

* toilet paper

* anything under a blanket

* unwanted house guests
* paper bags

* floor rugs

* Chuck Norris

* Feet.

Great with children (assuming you dont like the children). Probably best used for professional catfighting. He is housebroken, but only because he wants to be. This attack cat has trained himself to seek out his food anywhere you hide it and rip the bag open to feed himself, great for those who travel extensively. Also trained to drink water out of toilet bowls and dishwater from items in the sink. Knows how to open some doors. He will find you wherever you hide.

Neutered (trust me, you wont want to him to procreate). Has not been declawed, but you'll figure that out really fast.

Understands and responds to a variety of vulgar and profane verbal commands. Has a very soft and furry belly, like a teddy bear - however he will bite your face if you try to touch it.

Willing to accept trades. Potential adopters must have experience with trained attack-kittens... please be prepared to show scars.

For the love of God, someone please take this thing out of my house.

heyheyhayley, Cats do dream (and maybe have nightmares too) as you've observed. First of all, any time you get bitten or stuck by claws, wash it well with soap and water and put on an antibiotic cream such as Neosporin or Polytropin. Cat bites and scratches untreated can get infected easily, and you could end up with blood poisoning. Bites and scratches should never be ignored!

I don't think "Jazz" is the right one for you. Some people may find a cat like this a challenge to tame, but if you're afraid of her it would be better for you to let the cat go, and the other people and your own 5 cats must be taken into consideration. My suggestion is to find a cat rescue as she may be too mature to change her unpredictable behavior, or it's possible she needs an experienced person who may be able to help her. A shelter or humane society would likely put this cat down as "unadoptable". You are to be commended for trying to befriend and take care of this cat, but imho I don't think she's right for you or your situation. Good luck!

Don't worry, I've been bitten by so many cats I don't even think about the cleaning routine and do it. XD Bat got his foot stuck in something once and when I tried to help him he bit the dickens out of me!

Honestly, she's quite tame most of the time, but sometimes she just attacks! I think a lot of it has to do with that weird sleep phase she goes into, it's actually scary because she goes limp like she's dead and twitches, and her temperature will actually drop. I've felt her get pretty cold in one of these episodes. But then she wakes up, gets warmer, and seems fine. She seems very disoriented when she wakes up sometimes (which is why she attacked me the other day), like she has no idea what's going on. The people I live with and I have decided she can't stay here but that she does need to be taken somewhere where she will be taken care of. I had planned on a friend taking her but I'm not so sure any of my friends could handle her and I don't want to be responsible if any accidents occur- so I've ruled that out. I have to keep her in my home until I do find a place that will take her because she meows at my front door all night (she's done this since the night she got here, which makes me believe she belonged to someone. I have reason to believe someone dropped her off at my house actually. I found an empty cat food container in my yard!) If I don't let her in my home she will meow at the neighbors doors and let's just say he's not exactly too cat friendly. Thank you for the list of rescues, I will definitely look into them! I hope to find Jazz a good home very soon! =]

In case anyone was wondering, this is her. She's a beautiful girl, I have hope that she will find a good, loving home in the near future.

Let us know how it turns out. Good luck for "Jazz"! She's lovely and has that nice shiny silky coat that so many black cats have that never mats.
