Hi all,
I have been feeding my cats a 390 gram can of wet food a day at 8 hour intervals. This is for the both of them, not each. So i split the can into 3 and feed at 6am then 2pm and then 10pm. I also give random dry food - reckon only about half a cup a day for the 2 of them. (used to mix with the wet but read on here thats bad idea so have stopped that and now give seperate) One is 4 pounds the other is 5 pounds. They are house cats and run around alot and are very petite but not unhealthy as Vet has confirmed they are ok just very small build cats. They always follow me in kitchen like they want more food. So i'd appreciate your advice on if you think i have this right or need to feed more or less. All food i read seems to suggest 2 meals a day. But i thought little and often rather than more and less frequent. As always - thanks for your advice. Im learning all the time ! Titch and Smidge - 11 month old Tortie sisters. |

Three feedings is definitely preferable to one or two. I would cut out all dry if you can. It serves no purpose and isn't very good for them at all.
Not sure what you are feeding but grain free is best.

Grain free food has no corn, wheat, soy, rice... basically, no grains. Cats don't really need fruit & vegetables either (some food has peas and carrot chunks in it...why? I dunno, maybe the food company thinks cats are short eared, long tailed rabbits? LOL)
The best food to get is with any of these as the fist three or four ingredients: meat (yes, JUST meat such as "chicken", "lamb", "turkey", etc.), animal-meal (such as chicken-meal, beef-meal, etc.), animal-by-products (not really so great, but better than foods with corn-something as the first ingredient!). Water sufficient for processing is usually in there somewhere, and isn't really bad (actually can be good for cats with bladder issues like mine). I suppose ingredients such as veggies and fruits aren't so bad, just make sure they're past the 3rd or 4th on the list. I've seen all sorts of stuff from peas, carrots, potatoes, cranberries...even seaweed and kelp can be in some stuff. One food boasts that is avocado as a main ingredient... maybe because it has the good fats? |
