Chester is sneezing and coughing(?)

I just rescued Chester last week- got him neutered on Friday. Since I got him home he's been sneezing- a couple of times each day, but I've noticed that he's also developed what I think is a cough. He does it with his mouth closed, so it almost sounds like a sneeze but less forceful and a few of them at the same time. His nose is a little wet but there's not a lot of stuff coming out of it or anything. When he purrs it sounds like he has some stuff in his nose.
He also has really itchy ears. He shakes his head and flips his ears a lot. I don't know if it's related...I looked in his ears and I don't see evidence of ear mites.
This all has been going on since the day I got him (last Friday), but I don't know if it started before then.
I am taking him to the vet on Saturday morning but I was just wondering if anyone knows what this could be. He seems to be doing that coughing thing a little more often and there's still 3 days before his appointment. Any ideas? Does he just have a cold?
