Hi, I was just wondering how often people bought cat food (canned). I just bought a little over a months worth and it was pretty expensive. Do most people just buy one or two weeks worth at a time? I work at a pet store so I have easy access to buying food, I was just wondering what works best for most people.

I am still in process of transitioning my cats to new food so I buy smaller quantities more often. But when I establish their diet, I am planning on buying in bulk, once in few weeks.

It depends on which brands you are getting... I order my Evo canned from Chewy.com. I buy it in 13.2 oz cans. A 12 pack of the big cans are about 23 dollars. Evo is the cheapest cans Ive seen but they are excellent quality. I usually get two 12 packs at a time in whatever flavor I feel like buying that time.

I think that very much depends on the individual...their finances, amount of free time they have and how convenient the store is for them. I own a pet food store and I have customers who come in every few days, once a week, once in two weeks, once a month and even a few that stock up for several months at a time. And some are completely random...buy a whole bunch today, next time barely a week's worth. With those people I think it's money related.
Before I owned a store I'd buy about 6 weeks worth at a time. Now I find myself taking home enough for a week or two, but not always. I do that because I'm too lazy to load up a cart and take it out to the car. On the other hand I drive myself crazy because it seems I'm always low on something and need to remember to grab it. Half the time I'm walking out and remember, so I grab a handful of cans and then have to remember again in 2 days. I'm my own worst enemy...

If cans is too expensive for you try looking into Honest Kitchen Prowl. Its a dehydrated raw food. Grain free and no byproducts... It comes in a powder and you just add water to it and mix. Its basically making your own high quality canned without the high price. Comes in a 4 pound box of powder which is about 40 dollars. 4 pounds of powder is actually equal to 12 pounds of food if you added all the water to it. So its way cheap and more comparable to the cheaper prices of a kibble. I order mine from Chewy.com. Hope this might be an option for you!

I buy from Wag.com and usually get 5 cases at a time. I rotate flavors/brands every meal, so I use each one equally.

I'm pretty sporadic. If I'm in the area or if someone I'm with needs to go to the pet store I usually buy a few tins. Otherwise I get at least a few weeks to a month or more worth at a time, I don't have it down to any exact number.
I mostly buy larger tins to save money: Evo, California Naturals, Felidae and a few random smaller tins as a treat to mix things up occasionally. I also buy Friskies as sometimes it's all Blaze will eat, so I shop all over the place. Occasionally I buy a case of Solid Gold (it's cat food The store I'm in dictates which brands I buy, there's two I shop at for the high quality brands, they're almost identical in pricing for most things but on Felidae it's 1.75 in one store while it's 2.19 in another... however in the store where Felidae is so much cheaper Evo is 20 cents more. It pays off to shop around. Last edited by Carmel; 01-14-2013 at 09:32 PM. |

Yes, it does cost a lot, but it also lasts a long time.
