Cat hacks and is gurgling but nothing comes up

Im really worried about my cat. I took him to the vet yesterday and they took an xray and found nothing. He has a gurgling sound - kind of like a purr but he's not purring that loud. He also seems like he's going to spit up a hairball, but nothing happens. Other than this, he's acting normally - he's just over a year old. I thought he may had had pneumonia - that's how bad it was sounding. They tried to hear if the gurgling was in his throat or lungs, and they cannot tell. His heart and lungs looked fine on the xray. He seems to have a touchy gastro intestinal system as he had loose stool for along time until I put him on special food: duck and pea - Dick Van Patten's product. BAsed on the fact that he's been sensitive, I thought I'd remove all toys with cat nip in them.
yesterday he didn't hack or gurgle very much...today he's hacking again with nothing coming up. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Allergy maybe?? Hope someone else has some experience with something like this...
And can offer some advice.

Cat asthma? Youtube has a couple videos of cats with asthma...see if you can find one and if that sounds like his hacking.

Did he have a heart murmur? I would closely monitor the hacking/coughing....record times, locations, how long, etc. I could be being paranoid because Mocha coughed and hacked in her last month and the vet says that was a sign of her heart problems. I really hope and pray that is not what your little guy has!

May be just a dry cough. I've been doing this myself since the heating system came on. Not enough humidity in the air. If it continues get him vet checked by a cat only vet (maybe). Are you absolutely certain nothing is stuck?? A piece of bone, a toy, a string, a twisty tie??
