Clumping litter bad for em? - Page 2

that's gross! no more cap'n crunch for me! i just signed up to volunteer at the MHS (humane society.) hopefully, they'll have something for me to do around there.

Well I started this post/thread last week when I didn't have one yet, but was wondering what brand/kind to get to prepare. Got the kitten, and ended up getting this stuff Lasting Pride scoopable & flushable litter. Figured since kitty will be spending first week or so in bathroom I mine as well try the easy stuff first and see - she's gone #1 & #2 in the box - I'm so happy, watta relief! I was worried because it's in a bag and didn't see it until got home and opened, it's VERY fine like sand hence flushable I suppose, while the litter they use at the pound is much bigger like rock pebbles.

it is maddening when you first bring 'em home... will they or will they not use the box?!

well. it's quite easy to see why clumping litter is bad.

that stuff clumps to be hard. it gets stuck on a kitten/cat's paws. cats naturally lick everything off. so they ingest it.

you're not even meant to flush clumping litter cos it blocks plumbing. (my toilet overflooded once). now can you imagine that inside your cat's intestine's? how is that stuff meant to get out of your poor kitty's body?

a key ingredient in clumping litter is betonite (or something liek that) and basically that's the stuff they use to make cement. that's like concrete inside a cat's body. especially bad for kittens.

and all the dust. you'll find it dusty when you pour clumping litter. now your cat will like to go in and pee on this nice clean litter. they breathe in this dust that contains clumping ingredients. not good for lungs.

i used to use clumping litter until i read more on it. now i switched to the regular non clumping litter (can't afford the organic environmentally friendly stuff.) it's more difficult to clean, but it's a living creature's health we're talking about.

We used to get a flushable litter too (made out of recycled paper). I liked it because it actually smelled good (had a slight perfume smell). But my cats would fling it around too so I had to go back to the regular clumping litter.

And having 4 cats, I've found that Fresh Step does the best job of keeping the smell under control.

I don't have any problems witht dust with my clumping litter. The brand I use doesn't raise dust.

I have both clumping and non-clumpig litter at home for the moment since I have kittens (they use the litterbox with non-clumping) and I find it harder to keep the litterbox clean and fresh with the non-clumping litter.

yeah i have to say it's very true. non clumping is a pain to clean. swheatscoops, a clumping but non betonite litter, is supposedly extremely good. but way out of my budget.

that having been said, my cats used clumping for a couple of years and they're ok. but i would definitely keep kitties away from it. i'm mostly worried about ingestion so i'd rather play it safe than end up at an emergency vet.

apparently you should keep post surgery cats away from clumping too.
