Default Are poppy seeds bad for cats?

Does anyone know if poppy seeds are bad for cats? Aretha is always trying to get a bite out of my poppy seed muffin, but I never give her any. I just wanna know if it's a danger if she happens to find a crumb.

Thanks

I've never heard of poppy seeds as being toxic to cats so I scanned a couple lists I have that list foods that are toxic to pets and I didn't see that on the list.

I'm going to assume it's ok if she has a little, unless someone knows otherwise.

Thanks. I haven't heard anything about it either, but I wanted to ask around.

I've never heard that it was dangerous but then again I could be wrong. If she did fine a crumb I dont think it would be that terrible though.

Default poppy seeds

Funny thing about poppy seeds--if you eat them, your urine will test positive for opiates! (This happened to a friend of mine who ate a poppy-seed bagel before she went for testing for a government job! BTW she did get the job but she had to do some fast talking!) So there must be a tiny amount of some kind of opioid substance in them (since opium comes from poppies--though presumably a different variety than the ones in muffins!).

Anyway, a little bit shouldn't hurt her, but agree you should limit it as much as you can.

Cheers,
Dr. Jean

That's what I was thinking - there has to be something in all poppy seeds related to the drug, if in a small amount.

There was a Seinfeld episode around that too. Elaine tested positive for Opiates from eating a poppy seed muffin. I can't remember how it worked into the story?

Oh yeah! I remember that episode. I love that show.

Thanks for your input...hopefully she'll stop attacking me when I'm eating one. She loves bread.....like donuts, tortilla chips, graham crackers.....she's a weirdo.
