Sometimes I use just water, but 2 out of the 3 times (and its not always 3 times a month. sometimes just once or twice when im lazy) I use shampoo so they smell good and it actually cleans their hair.

But sometimes I just use water cuz it forces them to lick themselves clean. After the first few months... they don't even mind anymore. I often find them playing in their water bowl now. It seems they are used to water now and don't mind it at all.

I will try to get a picture of my cats dunking their paws in the water bowl... its really funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
