Kim, many, many animals have adverse reactions to ketamine. When I was in vet school, a healthy 6-month old kitten in to be spayed died from it. I have seen a lot of cats suffer a personality change after its use. It has its place in veterinary medicine, but it should be used with sufficient caution.
I had no trouble getting along without it. Cheers, Dr. Jean |

I am totally stressed out about this situation. Can anyone tell me how probable it is that my kitty has an oral cancer in her throat/layrnx and if she does, is there any thing that can be done to relieve her discomfort? I am envisioning putting her down on Monday while she is sedated and I don't want to do that if it is not the right thing or is premature. Can the vet tell by looking at her throat or do we really need to wait for the pathology report from the biopsy before making any decisions?
Her activity level has decreased somewhat over the last month or so and she has lost a little weight but not a lot. I attributed both of those things to her sore throat but now I'm not sure. She still purrs, grooms and sits on our laps and she even plays a little but her eyes are not as bright as they were even a week ago. She has gone from sleeping on top of my husband or me to sleeping in the bed but not touching us. She is eating about a half a can of Fancy Feast twice a day. I don't push more on her because she gets really bad diarrhea from canned food. Thanks for any insight. Jean |
