to wrap up the story:
the little guy was still doing it this morning, so I called the vet. the vet tech advised it didn't sound normal and recommended bringing him in, so I made the appointment. then I left the house for about 45 minutes, and from the time I got home until we left for the vet, he didn't do it once! anyway, the vet checked him over -- for anything caught in his throat and for bowel obstruction. she didn't think it was a hairball. she said doing it that often wouldn't be a hairball. but she couldn't find anything wrong. after I got him home, he was at it again, but now it's more like a cough. I'm thinking it might be an after-effect of his cold last week. each of my cats has had a cold, and each one was different in symptoms and severity. so at this point, it's still a mystery, but doubtful anything serious. I really don't like bringing cats to the vet unless it's really necessary. they get too stressed. there's a risk of catching something. and Mellie is treating him like a strange cat again after finally starting to tolerate him. last night they almost bumped noses! now that process is pushed back. sigh....
