Default Wet food and new cat

It doesn't seem like my new guy likes wet food, which is generally all I feed.

I put some down earlier today and he ate a little. I put some down a little later and he once again ate a little. I was a little worried about his appetite so I gave him a little dry food. He scarfed it down so fast!!!

Is there a way to get him to adjust to the wet food or do some cats just not like it?

Not sure if they will adjust or not. I have one cat, Pepper, that will NOT eat wet food, never has. I feed wet and dry both here.

Good luck!

some cats are addicted to dry and won't touch wet. I can't ever imagine that though... I know I'd hate eating dry food if I were a cat I'm lucky enough that mine prefers the wet.

Is he a kitten or adult? Kittens are more likely to adjust without major problems... just a little time. If he's an adult there's still hope. It might take more time and work on your part though. At least he's eating some of it and not starving himself. I'd say find a few brands to try... he may prefer one over the other. But if he knows he can hold out for the dry food he'll be more likely to wait until you give in. Don't feed any more dry unless he REFUSES to eat for a day. You can also try mixing them gradually, or sprinkling crushed dry onto the wet. But always take it up really quickly if he's not eating it because bacteria grows really fast on dry food that gets wet.

Good luck!

He is an adult. They said he is a year old. I just don't want him not to eat. Of course they gave me Lysine to mix with wet food, so I will just mix it with very little....since that is all I have been able to get him to eat.

i recently adopted a 1 year old male and even though they can be large at that age i'd say they're still mentally more kitten like and immature. He was use to dryfood at the shelter he was living in but after 3 days he started eating the wetfood i was offering and i only leave both of my cats dryfood during my sleep hours so that they dont bug me to be fed early in the morning. He had really dry and flakey fur when i first adopted him but not its alot less dry and softer after a few weeks of wetfood.

Default He may never really like wet food..........

some cats are like that, mine will only eat a couple of teaspoons and thats it, but will wolf down dry food. Make sure if you give him dry to have water available at all times, and maybe try a couple of different brands of wet food. My picky guy will only eat one or two types of wet food, and I think I have tried them all. Good luck and give it time.

Well it appears he is sick too so I don't think that is helping his appetite either. He is off to the vet tomorrow. I'm going to keep trying different foods, but if he won't eat I will give him the dry. I can't deprive him food!!

Otis won't touch wet. It may be healthier, but not if its sitting on the floor or in the trash can. So we feed dry mostly, and throw the wet in once a day so Jasmine can get hers...

Some children won't eat vegetables either... even though they're good for them

My two prefer dry. We've tried wet food and they don't like it. They will only lick up the gravy and the rest just sits there. Besides, when Simone does have wet food she throws it up. The vet has said it might be too rich for her system to handle. So, dry it is.

kitty_kisses, you are so right on the vegetable thing. You can't expect every cat to like wet food, even if it's good for them. LOL!

keep trying different foods. there's a lot of difference from one brand to the next, or even from one flavor to the next. Mellie will hardly touch anything turkey-flavored for one reason, but she'll scarf down chicken in the same brand.
