Oh no....I think my new cat has a URI
He started sneezing last night, but he was still active and friendly. I made an appointment this afternoon to go to the vet on Monday. Well I just got home from work. Now he has a runny nose along with the sneezing. He is kind of lethargic too. I called back and switched the appointment to tomorrow morning. He is still quarintined to a room away from my other cats and puppy because of the worms. Is there anything I could be or should do until tomorrow morning? This poor baby

No, I think you'll be fine until tomorrow. Many cats get a cold while they're in a shelter. (or after they come home). Mainly you have to watch to make sure it's not serious and that you don't get any complications. Since you already have a vet appointment, you should be in good shape. Make sure your cat drinks water. In the meantime, what some people do to ease their congestion is to give them some time in high humidity by keeping them in the bathroom while they're taking a shower. Or you could just put your cat in the bathroom and let the hot shower run for 10 minutes or so.
Be sure you continue to keep him away from other cats, and wash your hands after handling him, so you don't spread it to your other cats yourself. |

What do the vets do for a URI? My kitten has been sneezing for a week but has been eating, playing, and has no discharge from his eyes. If it is viral doesn't it just need to take its course or can they give him something?
Thanks!

Well I'm back from the vet. He does have a URI. She gave me clavamox(I think that is what it is called) twice a day for 7 days. He goes back next Saturday to be checked again.
They checked his stools and didn't find any worms. They dewormed, he had revolution at the shelter and I have the second dose. Hopefully after his next visit he will be healthy and ready to mee the other cats!

The bizarre thing is that we have absolutely no concern for ourselves; we have extracted stuff from each others' hands, feet, eyes, done what amounts to home surgery, stitched each other up...not even giving it a second thought. We'll cheerfully eat a leftover porkchop that sat in the frying pan on the back of the woodstove overnight, food that got dropped on the ground, food that the cat has stepped in...whatever... But when we get home from the shelter, it's like the scene in "Silkwood" wher Meryl Streep sets off the radiation detector and they drag her off to be hosed down and scrubbed by guys in hazmat gear. God forbid a germ get on the cat! Some days I wonder about our mental state... |
