Default My new kitten smells

Hi there

I finally got my new little Korat "Mako" today - he's a male kitten about 10 weeks old, and I've noticed that he has a "smell" about him.

The breeder had washed him this morning before we picked him up so I know he isn't dirty - just wondering whether male cats have a stronger scent than females?

I have a female about 10 years old and she doesn't smell at all.

Anyone else have any knowledge on this?

Thanks!!

What is the smell like? Pet shampoo usually has a distinct smell, and that could be what you're smelling - the way it blends with his scent. Also, in my experience, kittens (as human infants) often have a distinct scent of their own. It is probably normal, but without a description of the scent, or specific details of behavior, it is hard to say.

BTW, I love Korats, you should try and post some pictures!

It's a musky sort of smell - not immediately obvious and if I sniff him I can't always smell it.

It could very well be a result of being in a new environment - and it may go away eventually. I wasn't sure whether it was pheremones or not, and if so perhaps it goes away once he is desexed.

Mako is adorable, I've got one good photo already. he doesn't sit still long enough to have his photo taken. I don't know how to put photos in messages - how do you do it?

If he is not fixed, that could very well be the reason. Give it some time, and see how it goes - it's likely since he comes from a breeder he has had a thorough health check, so I wouldn't worry too much.

At the top of the page, there are links to picture tutorials of how to post; there is also a picture tutorial for uploading your picture here if it is not already hosted somewhere.

Good luck! Can't wait to see your kitties!

He's adorable. Most kittens do have a distinct scent to them, some more than others. It goes away in time for most kitties. Enjoy your new sweetie!

Kitten's usually have a distinct smell....and it gets worse when they start teething! My Siamese had HORRIBLE breath when he was teething. Yuck!
