Echoing what AddFran said. I keep all my cats' nails nice and trim and they never scratch. Ever

Re: declawing. Ok, well that makes more sense. I was puzzled about long vet stay.
It's your choice, and you've obviously made up your mind. I just have to say my little piece, then I'll shut up about it. Doesn't sound like you gave them much chance at your home first, because it seems like you'd had them for a very short time. It was unfair to bring them into your home and expect that they would know where to scratch in a week or month without any training or nail-clipping. Just because you had other cats that were scratch-crazy doesn't mean all cats are the same. Also, I can't see furniture and drapes being all that important. I have furniture and antiques, that cost $3000+ each and I don't blink when they're scratched. It's part of the cat package. I really hope that your cats won't have any health or behavioral problems crop up later as a result, like aggressive biting. I wish you luck.
