Default URI...are my other cats getting it? *Update*

I heard Zack sneeze yesterday morning and Lamar last night. Now this morning I heard Zoee sneezing and her nose is a little runny

Mateo is now starting to seem a little better. He has been on his antibiotics fo 4 1/2 days now.

Are all my kitties getting a URI now????

I don't understand. I kept them separated and religiously washed my hands and changed my clothes alot too!!!

When I took Mateo to the vet on Saturday they said if my other cats started sneezing to keep an eye on them. What exactly does that mean? Guess I should have asked, but I figured they would all be fine.

Oh boy. It sure does seem like your other kitties may be coming down with something. That is so frustrating especially when you've done everything "right". Ya know?

I'd call the vet that you took Mateo too and see if they will give you any guidance over the phone. Perhaps since they know what Mateo has and know it contagious, they'd be able to give you something without charging another fee for the office visit. It's a long shot, but some of them will do it.

Sounds like they caught Mateo's cold. Like humans, colds can be caught despite all precautions. There's really not much you can do except let it run its course. The antibiotics are a precaution for any secondary infections, not for the cold. Keep an eye on their discharge. Any eye or nose running should be clear. If it starts turning green or yellow, then run them to the vet.

You may want to get some stronger smellier food for a little while too, if they're stuffed up they won't smell as well, and may not eat.

One thing you might be tempted to do on your own is stop Mateo's antibiotics, since he's "getting better" and share them with the other cats. Please don't. Excuse me if you already know this, but I just thought I'd caution you that antibiotics should be taken by the one they're prescribed for until they're all used up. If you stop Mateo's meds now, any bacterial infection he may have had they were prescribed for may not be completely gone yet, and then it will come back. And you don't have enough left over to give a full course to the other cats.

I don't know if the meds were given because of an actual infection or just as a precaution. If the later, you don't really need to run to the vet for more for the other cats unless there's some indication that they're developing complications. You probably know the med doesn't treat the cold itself, it just treats complications.

Sorry if you knew this already. Maybe somebody who doesn't will read this, and I'm just killing time right now, anyway

Thanks for the replies.

I know that Mateo needs to finish his course of antibiotics. I wouldn't dream of trying to give it to the other cats.

It definitly is frustrating that now they all seem to be getting sick. Ecspecially when I have been so cautious and they have been separated too. Not to mention I have been sleeping on the floor for a week in the room with Mateo I don't want to leave him locked up in the room all day while I am at work and then all night too, so I have been sleeping in the room with him.

I guess I will just keep an eye on the other three and hopefully they won't get worse!! Mateo goes back to the vet on Saturday morning too.

Yes, it's frustrating indeed. Hopefully they'll all run their course without any complications.

Your avatar of a cat walking is really kinda neat!

Well I just got back from Mateo's vet appointment. He was healthy enough to get his rabies vaccine. He also got his Feline Leukimia. His lungs sound good. He has only been sneeezing occasionally. He is very active now too. He is almost entirely better. His stool came back clear, so the hookworm is gone too.

I told them that the other three were now sneezing and had Mateo's cold. They gave me clavamox tablets 7 days/twice a day for all three of them. No charge!! Plus I didn't have to cart all of them in there!

I gave them each a pill already!

sounds great!! I suspect they probably didn't need the antibiotics, but since you got the extra N/C and you already started.....

by now you must be getting pretty good at giving cats pills!! maybe you should hire yourself out as a Feline Medication Doser (I just made that up on the spur of the moment )

I would suggest you give them all a little dollop of plain yogurt every day to help replenish the normal intestinal flora that the antibiotics kill off.

NO CHARGE?
Where do you people live? I'm surprised we don't get charged for sneezing in the waiting room!

They said it was covered by the humane society, because they all got sick as a result of MAteo being sick. Mateo is covered for 14 days at any VCA animal hospital by the humane society. Of course he is covered only for basic stuff URI, UTI, diareha, vomiting, and a couple of other things. Plus his neuter was done the day before I got him and his rabies vaccine too.

Poor Zack....my long hair cat. He looks so miserable right now. Actually the other three all seem pretty miserable. They are laying around and being lazy (even for cats). I hope they are feeling better soon. I don't really want to introduce Mateo when they aren't feeling well.
