We adopted Abbey about a month ago--she was a baby stray, about 10 weeks old, very thin, and sick with a respiratory infection. Abbey responded well to antibiotics and within a few days was playing like crazy and had a great appetite. She has been wormed and is up to date on kitten shots. The only thing I noticed until now was that sometimes when she plays really hard she will rest and breathe with her mouth open for a few minutes, then be ready to play again. I have not had a cat before, so don't know if this is normal. Then this Friday my daughter woke me up ( i work nights, so I was asleep) and said Abbey had just had an episode where she wheezed with her mouth open for a couple of minutes and there was a wet spot beneath her like she had wet herself. But by this time she seemed fine and in no distress. I told my daughter to watch her closely and let me know if she had any more problems. Well, a couple of hours later Abbey had another episode of wheezing--same thing, it only lasted briefly and then she seemed fine. At this point we took her to the vet immediately. The vet listened to her lungs, took her temp, couldnt find anything wrong. In fact she had gained a half pound since her last visit for shots. She has not had any bad wheezing since then, but yesterday she only ate once and refused anything else. This is unusal because Abbey usually wants to eat 4 times a day. We give her a pouch of wet food and some kitty milk supplement with each meal. Today she completely refused her kitty food. She did eat a little cottage cheese, but nothing else. She will play some, but seems not nearly as lively. She has not had any more obvious wheezing, and she has no eye or nasal discharge.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks! |

It sounds like she has a little cold which could be giving her a stuffy nose. If she can't smell the food, she won't eat.
I know what my mother does for her cat, but ask the vet if this is ok to do for this cat. Mom bought some saline nose spray (vet's instructions) not the kind with any med. of any sort, just plain saline spray. She would drip some into the cats nose and she could smell again. Mom's cat has trouble (don't remember what exactly) and gets a stuffy nose a lot. Vet said it was the result of an illness early in life. Word of caution: if it's ok to do this, she WILL sneeze right after. (and she probably won't really like it being done) |
