Default Cat loose stools and unclean anal area

My 14 year old white Persian is overweight and does not clean up her anal area. Daily I must clean it. Use rubber glove, cotton swabs and water with a little bit of Johnson's Baby Shampoo to clean it up. I think the situation would be a little better if I could get her to have more solid stools. When her behind gets left for more than a day she "scoots" on the carpet (which of course drives us up the wall). ARE THERE ANY SUGGESTIONS OUT THERE ON WHAT WE MIGHT DO TO GET HER STOOLS HARDER or for that matter, any other suggestions. Would appreciate anything at this point. THANKS

What are you currently feeding her?

Also, do you have her back side groomed professionally on occasion? You might benefit by having her shaved back there.

also, the scooting might suggest a problem with the anal glands, although anal gland problems can results from improper stool, too, so I would address that area, also.

The first issue is to determine the cause of the loose stools. If a vet finds no problems, then you probably want to try a change of diet. However, it could be anal gland issues as someone else said, could be worms, could be other things, so they need to be eliminated first.

A simple thing is to cut or shave the hair in the area, not to solve the problem, but to reduce the mess.

What are you currently feeding her? First thing I would eliminate any table scraps. I would make sure I was giving her a high quality food. She may need a diet variety of food based on her weight. Are you free feeding? Also, most find dry food to produce harder stools than wet, but the disadvantages may outweigh the advantages.

The loose stools may also be a sign of irritable bowell syndrome. Check with your vet for a real diagnosis.
