Is this something I can buy over the counter? Or do I have to have a prescription?

Laxatone is a lubricant, and the main ingredient is mineral oil. Laxatone is actually just a brand of lubricant laxative, other similar brands are: Felaxin, Laxanip, Petrotone, Lax'aire, and Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly (which is just petroleum jelly).
It is used for constipation, fecal impactions, megacolon, and hairballs. Laxatone and other mineral oil lubricants are available over the counter, unlike Lactulose. I should also add that Mineral oil is available OTC (over the counter) as enemas for human use. DO NOT USE THESE ON CATS OR DOGS. Lactulose is is a synthetic disaccharide (2 simple sugar molecules linked together) derived from lactose, the primary sugar in milk. The enzymes in the intestines of mammals cannot split lactuose; therefore, it is not absorbed and passes through the intestines to the colon unchanged. The normal bacteria in the colon have the colon have the enzymes needed to split latulose and break it down into organic acids. These increase the concentration of these substances in the colon and result in more water entering the colon. The increased water content softens the stool and increases the fecal mass, which helps stimulate evacuation, usually within 3 to 12 hours. I hope that helped answer your question.

That answered my question well, thanks. I have another
If, whenever a cat must take antibiotics which kills all bacteria including the good, would that not cause part of why a cat could be constipated? The bacteria nescessary for digestion and good intestinal funtion takes a long time to rebiuld back to the normal state in a cat. I've heard sometimes as long as a year. If that is the case, then giving lactulose for a cat that's been on long term antibiotic treatment would seem to be almost nescessary. Especially a cat that already had a problem with constipation, and elderly too. What about enemas, is there a negative to giving cats an enema for constipation? I mean other than a possible mess.

My poor Sabby goes in for enemas on occasion. He hates it (and who wouldn't!). I always take Sabby to the vet for enemas. I don't think I could do it at home. If you want to do it at home, get advice from your vet. And never use a Fleet enema. Those are toxic and kill nearly instantly.

Well I don't know what's going to take care of my cat's constipation problem, but he's going to the vet in the morning. He's just not pooping out what he's chowing down and today he's showing obvious stress about having to go. But he doesn't want to go anywhere near the litter box and acts like he's trying to hold it in. Either, that, or he can't get it out. He could poop on my pillow right now and I'd be thrilled.
After strugling to find a comfortable position he finally went to sleep. Now he's mad at me because I won't let him eat anything untill the vet decides what should be done or he goes poop. I gave him some petromalt and now he's really mad I hope he doesn't have any problems to serious tonight. I'm not sure what that would be but, from reading some of the other post and comments, vomiting and, I imagine, probably vocal crying out.

Well, I got Bugs a prescription for the lactulose. That was on Monday. He has not had a bowel movement at all, not yet anyways. He still wants to eat and I am letting him, but it's back to the vet in the morning, 8 oclock sharp!
I just hate putting him through something he hates

Hi. My vet told me my 11 yr old cat needs to be on Lactulose for the rest of her life. My question is can I buy Lactulose for humans and give it to her? Is there a difference? Is Lactulose a brand name? Does anyone have a brand thier cat likes? Sweetie Pie was diagnosed with leg perthes. Basically, both femurs have the balls broke off and are lodged in the hip socket. The vets were stunned when they saw the xrays. They asked me if she had been hit my a car. (No, she is an indoor cat). She is comfortable with the steroid shot and the lactulose. It hurt her to bear down to poop, that's why I took her in. Thanks! |
