Hi,
We had a fire department here. My husband forgot a pot on the stove and there was smoke everywhere. We live in 3 bedroom apartment. Thanks God there was no fire. The superintendent acted fast. I'm still shaking and thanking God. The cats seem to fine but what if something happen to them? Could the smoke do something bad to them? What should I do? I don't have money to go to the vet. I'm really broke.

OMG - this is just not your week, bad Dan!
They should be fine, I had a friend stay when I first moved over and he went for a walk to talk to his gf on the phone and did the same thing - the cats were more scared by the fire alarm than anything else. We brought them to the vet and he actually laughed at me for being so paranoid. Just make sure that they get lots of fresh air and keep an eye on them make sure they are not making and choking sounds or anything. Make sure they have clean water and all drink too - thats all the vet told me.

Thank you so much!
Yes, it was Dan and I think I gonna kill him! LOL Just kidding. I'm still in shock and I'm all shaking... I will keep my eye on the cats. They seem to be normal, they play and stuff. I opened all the windows so the fresh air can come in. How can I make them to drink water? I feel so sorry that the cats had to go through this. The alarm is so loud and even when I hear it I hate the sound. I think they had to be so afraid! I gave them some treats to feel better...

Getting rid of the smell completely is a major task and I'm sure far beyond what you want to spend. It would help to wash all floors, shampoo carpets and furniture, clean all wood and counters. Also, be very sure to thoroughly clean their dishes, any mats, etc. Ideally, you would replace their toys, but you would have to judge how close to the smoke they were. The easiest way to decide on something like a mouse is to pick it up and smell it. If it smells smoky, discard. Otherwise, it should be ok.

If you go over to the new Linens and Things they have (or at least had last week) Orange Glo - that is great for cleaning up after things like this as it smells strongly of oranges - just keep the cats well away from it and open some windows as it smells ALOT.
How much smoke damage is there - do things actually look black? We were lucky when my friend was staying in that he had closed the kitchen door so the smoke was largely contained to the kitchen. The poor cats still jump when they hear the alarm clock tho

Nothing is black - thanks God!
The same thing happened to us about 2-3 years ago (again Dan's fault) and that apartment didn't have alarm set up (which is against the law!). I remember, we got home and you couldn't see anything how much smoke there was. I think it was worse. (we didn't have cats in that time). It smells only in the kitchen and the living room. The bedrooms are fine. We are lucky, it's little bit windy and the wind blows through the apartment - I"m freezing here but I don't care because I can't stand the smell! I will check the toys. All of them are in the living room. I already washed their bowels and mats. Now I gonna wash the floors. I have lot of work to do tonight!

It might be best just in case they are smoke covered but if they were anything like mine they were straight to the safest place (in Boomers case this was out of the smallest crack we had left the window open - the others were under the sofas.
I feel sorry for you having the windows open - its freezing today!!!! Is Dan home yet and is he still alive?

Dan had to leave to teach guitar.
I went to the superintendent and gave her a big hug. If it wouldn't be her and our neighbour, things would be probably worse. I threw away the pot, which is all black inside (he was cooking beans in it). One thing is for sure, I won't allow Dan in the kitchen anymore! And by the way, did I tell you about how we was cooking almost 4 years ago and the pan went on fire? He was on the phone and he was frying fries. (I wasn't home). It started burning and he put it under the water - which made it even worse! The fire department came and the whole kitchen ceiling was black. I came home from work, and we were both cleaning (with water and soup) the ceiling. So, Dan made fire (or smoke) already 3 times within the 4 last years! The cats are not from smoke - I don't see anything on them. BUT I can smell smoke when I smell them. LOL It's not probably good to bath them today because they are already stressed. Maybe I will give them a bath in few days.
